Gerrit Meijer is professor of pathology with a special interest in cancer research, focusing on the gastrointestinal tract. After finishing medical school at the Vrije Universiteit (VU) Amsterdam he completed his PhD on “Risk assessment in patients with colorectal adenomas”. He pursued his research during his training in pathology, with a special attention to phenotype-genotype relationships in the context of translational research.
Professor Meijer leads a translational research group that focuses on gastrointestinal cancer. Gerrit stood at the basis of the successful implementation of comparative genomic hybridization in the Department of Pathology, VU University Medical Center (VUmc), and was one of the initiators in the field of DNA micro-array technology at VUmc. IT infrastructure for translational research and a bioinformatics dry lab complete these facilities.
Gerrit is chair of the department of pathology, member of the board of directors of the Cancer Center Amsterdam / the VUmc Research Institute for Oncology and Immunology, has served as director of the Oncology Graduate School Amsterdam and editor in chief of Cellular Oncology.
On March 1, 2015, he has joined the Netherlands Cancer Institute as head of the department of pathology and group leader.
